Brixham Devon
The historic fishing port of Brixham, scene of the arrival in England of William Prince of Orange in 1688, retains the charm of a bygone age around the harbour with it's narrow streets, quayside and fishing fleet. The hustle & the bustle of the fish market and the arrival & departure of the boats creates a unique atmosphere and backdrop to your visit.
It is located at the Western end of beautiful Torbay just 3 miles & 7 miles respectively west of the resorts of Paignton & Torquay and only 4 miles east of Dartmouth. Just a few minutes drive from Dartmouth are the stunning unspoilt beaches of Blackpool sands & Slapton sands (great for children & sun bathing). Dartmoor - at once romantic, mysterious, wild & eerie is only a very short drive away.
Brixham itself has a total of 4 beaches and an open-air swimming pool, which is free
of charge and open during the summer months.
From the harbour nestled at the foot of the town and surrounded on three sides by
steeply ascending fisherman's cottages, you can explore Brixham's fine shops and a
wide variety of restaurants to suit every palate & budget and of course fresh fish is
abundant & quite delicious!
The Marina is located just outside the inner harbour and easily reached along the quayside. Here you find the trappings of the luxury boats (of all shapes & sizes, from mega yachts to sailing dinghies mingling in perfect harmony with each other), ships chandler and the marina-side pubs/restaurants/open air cafe. Since the days of Henry VIII, Brixham has played its part in the defence of the Nation. The headland known as 'Berry Head' is now a National Nature reserve but was also a famous military site. The ruins of its fortifications built to protect gun positions are the perfect examples of some of the best-preserved Napoleonic forts in the country.
If you enjoy walking, you can follow the miles of undulating coast path along the
dramatic, unspoilt coastline to the River Dart & beyond with its rare wild flowers &
small coves & a multitude of seabirds that find sanctuary amongst the cliffs.
With its location in one of the most beautiful regions in England & fascinating history
and its proximity to many beaches, with a wide variety of pubs, cafes& restaurant,
Brixham has something for everyone!
